You should probably hold off on getting into X-Wing and instead invest in a Star Trek game with miniatures and combat (as I suspect you'd enjoy it more, and there's nothing wrong with that).
For a board game that captures the feel of Star Trek (right down to episodic adventures, science missions, cloaking, and much more) pick up Star Trek: Fleet Captains from WizKids. It comes with twelve Federation and twelve Klingon ships. In the next month or two a twelve ship Romulan expnasion is coming out. I really like this game.
For a miniature combat game that is played on a map with squares, consider Star Trek: Tactics also from WizKids. It uses the miniatures from their Fleet Captains game (escept these are pre-painted) coupled with the basic rules from their HeroClix line but injected with a heavy dose of Star Trek flavor. Again, later this year another expansion will be coming out to add ships for several races (Cardassion, Klingon, Dominion) to the Federation and Klingon already available. I haven't played this game, but it has sold incredibly well so I get the impression people like it.
Check them out and maybe one of them will be just what you're looking for.
