Adding minis many people recognize and buy is more logical than adding minis only a few people know and buy.
Maybe, but I wouldn't be interested in buying miniatures that I already have. And are pretty readily available for those who don't!
I'm not much for the expanded universe, but I've got no problems seeing miniatures from the second trilogy.
What is the second trilogy? Ep 1-3? In that case, those would fit be movie-canon, and my statement was about non-movie-canon ships (even though personally I'd much rather see AT-ATs than Naboo Starfighters being made)
As to already having the minis, TIE fighters and X-Wings would've never been successful if that argument was valid. I also don't agree that we have seen great, movie accurate 1:270 replica AT-ATs, AT-STs and snowspeeders before, or that they are currently easily obtainable. The closest thing to a good looking snowspeeder in that scale is probably the Micro Machine evrsion, and for an AT-AT I just don't know.
I can see FFG making a second game, Star Wars Ground Battles or something, in the same scale. That way they have multiple entry levels that all can be combined, or not. This is the direction they are taking with the Star Wars RPG too, and it makes a lot of sense from a business POV to not just make expansions, but full games. They sell more.
