Here are some rules I've been working on for an atmospheric battle in the clouds. The rules could be used with any other mission objectives or in a standard 100pt dog fight (but asteroids would be a bit out of place).
Atmospheric Battle: Given the extra strain from gravity and the increased stress on the ship from air pressure:
Whenever a ship would remove a stress token (i.e. executing a Green Maneuever), it instead rolls one Green die: on an [EVADE] result, it may remove one stress token (otherwise it does not remove any stress tokens).
Clouds: these templates can be made by cutting white paper into cloud-like shapes. For a 100pt battle, three cloud templates should be used: one large and two small. The large template should be roughly the size of an 8x11" piece of paper, with the edges trimmed and cut down to give a cloud-like appearance. The smaller two should be made in the same fashion with a 8x5.5" piece of paper (ie a half sheet).
The large cloud should be deployed as close to the center of the board as possible (the player with Initiative may determine the cloud's orientation), then players alternate with each placing one of the small clouds (starting with the player who has Initiative). No part of a template may be deployed within Range 2 of a player's edge or within Range 2 of another cloud.
Cloud Templates have the following special rules:
Movement: During the execution of a maneuver, if a ship's base would overlap with another ship's base and that other ship's base is at least partially overlapping a cloud template, then the moving ship (in addition to following the rules for overlapping another ship) also gains 1 Stress Token).
Combat: Clouds are treated like obstacles for the purpose of making an attack. (If the shortest line drawn between the attacker and target overlaps with any part of a cloud template, the target rolls +1 Agility die). [NOTE: Clouds are not technically obstacles, so moving through them does not result in a roll for damage.]
There you go: rules that are pretty simple that use even simpler homemade components (add some strewn-apart cotton balls to your cloud templates for a nice wispy three-dimensional effect). Should add a really different dynamic to the dog fight.
